How argan oil is produced

Argan fruit is harvested, the hard nut inside is cracked open by hand, and the kernels are pressed — unroasted for cosmetic oil, roasted for culinary oil. It's a labor-intensive process, which is part of why authentic argan oil isn't a cheap commodity product.

Why Morocco

The argan tree grows almost exclusively in southwestern Morocco's Souss-Massa region. That narrow native range is why authentic argan oil is inseparable from Morocco — much like Champagne or Parmigiano-Reggiano are tied to their regions of origin.

Frequently asked questions

What is Moroccan argan oil?

Moroccan argan oil is an oil pressed from the kernels of the argan tree (*Argania spinosa*), a species native almost exclusively to southwestern Morocco. It comes in two forms: an unroasted cosmetic version used on skin, hair, and nails, and a roasted culinary version used in Moroccan cooking.

What is the difference between cosmetic and culinary argan oil?

Cosmetic argan oil is pressed from unroasted kernels and is used on skin, hair, and nails. Culinary argan oil is pressed from roasted kernels, has a toasted aroma, and is used in food, most famously in amlou. The two are not interchangeable.

How should argan oil be stored?

Keep argan oil tightly sealed, away from direct sunlight and heat, ideally at room temperature. Proper storage helps preserve its aroma and quality for longer.

How do I use argan oil?

Cosmetic argan oil is applied directly to hair, skin, or nails — a few drops are usually enough. Culinary argan oil is used cold or gently warmed, drizzled over bread, couscous, or blended into amlou, rather than used for high-heat cooking.
